Street Intake
During testing we discovered that the stock intake on the R56 MINI goes into vacuum during hard acceleration choking off the engine and restricting maximum power. The goal of the street intake was to open up the intake and allow the engine to take in as much air as possible, increasing power, providing better throttle response and faster turbo spool. The Street intake was designed to be a two stage system, as a standalone intake or working with our Ram Air Scoop which feeds high pressure ambient air to the filter, further increasing throttle response and power from the engine. The K&N filter allows the sound of the turbo spooling up and the blow off noise of the bypass valve to be heard during shifting. The intake kit consists of a unique bracket that locks into the bottom of the stock intake creating a pocket to hold a high flow filter. The filter is then connected to the air flow meter using a silicone connector secured with stainless steel hose clamps. All other hardware on the intake is also stainless steel. Complete installation can be done quickly and without any modifications to the car and can also be completely returned to stock just as quick. The intake is offered in Black matte powder coat. The DDMWorks Ram Air Scoop (RAS)
A nice upgrade for the Street intake is the Ram Air Scoop. The shape of the DDMWorks RAS was designed to accelerate the incoming air from the hood scoop and keep feeding cold air into the turbo and engine. Two air diverters on the back of the RAS direct the incoming air down and wash the filter on the street intake with a cool ambient air supply. By attaching the RAS to the bonnet, regular maintenance of your MINI is completely unaffected with the intake installed. Things like spark plugs, oil filter and oil fill are just as accessible as stock. The RAS attaches to the bonnet using existing mounting points, requiring no drilling or modifications for installation. Testing showed that open filters without the RAS in place see good temperatures during light cruise, but during long pulls the temperature of the incoming air continued to climb as the turbo heated the air coming in through the hood scoop. With the simple addition of the RAS on those intakes, temperatures stayed only a few degrees above ambient, which resulted in better throttle response and more consistent power. The intake comes in two parts, the RAS or Ram Air Scoop which makes use of the non functional hood scoop that was just waiting to be used as an intake source, and the DDMWorks PFB or Pressurized Filter Box. The DDMWorks RAS (Ram Air Scoop)
The unique shape of the DDMWorks RAS was designed to accelerate the incoming air from the hood scoop and keep the new intake box under pressure forcing even more cold air into the turbo and engine. We also wanted regular maintenance of the car to be unaffected with the intake installed, so even with the RAS mounted to the bonnet of the car, regular maintenance of your engine is just as easy as stock. The scoop attaches to the bonnet using existing mounting points so there is no drilling or modifications needed for installation. The RAS can also be purchased separately for use with other intake systems that leave an exposed filter in the back of the engine bay. The DDMWorks PFB (Pressurized Filter Box)
During that intake testing, we learned a lot about the new turbo MINI. A simple filter attached off of the Air flow meter did a really good job of freeing up the intake on the new R56. In fact this simple intake proved to be a real good bang for the buck. However, we did not want to produce just a good intake, we knew we could do better. So we took the time to seal the intake with a covered box that installs easily over the bottom of your stock intake. With the system in place the RAS seals with the PFB resulting in a pressurized system at speed that eliminates restriction before the turbo like no simple filter intake system can duplicate. It also keeps the air coming into your MINI at ambient, a big plus if you are looking to make consistent power during long full throttle accelerations at the track. The PFB comes with a K&N filter that really allows you to hear the turbo spool and the bypass valve sounds during shifts. High Flow Foam Filter for your R56!
The ALTA panel filter is not just a normal panel filter replacement like many others. The older R53 Mini air box was made pretty well in that the portion above and below the filter is very open. The New R56 filter is much different!
The lower portion of the R56 filter has very little room for air to travel across the entire filter. We saw room for improvement in this filter by making it slightly offset and slightly thinner. This simple change allows for more air to be drawn across the entire filter. Besides that, it is a high flow foam filter, which like all our other filters provides less restriction, and the ability to clean it for the life of the car.
From the above diagram you can see how much thicker the OEM filter is and how far it hangs down. The Alta filter provides roughly 2 times the volume of air under the filter. Dyno results will follow very soon! Installation of this filter can be done in 5 minutes of work and be clean hundreds of times before needing replacement.
